A country formed as an escape from religious persecution and economical opression. Founded by white men. Built by black hands. On land stolen from indigenous people. Kept out of reach from those who seek refuge. Prejudicial to those who do not conform to religious belief. A utopia for the one percent, dystopia for the ninety-nine.
What can the future of this dystopia possibly hold in favor of all citizens living in it? Centuries of oppression are archived in quilts that are passed down to tell a story. New quilts are made every day that document and memorialize the hardships this country brings. Could the inclusive environment that we dream of be achieved? What would it look like? What would documentation from that time look like?
The Utopian Quilt will be an archive of the future of America which is dreamt to be a true utopia. It will be made up of various patterns and making techniques that are featured on the quilts of American history and of quilts used in activism today.
